I've been trying to get my stash more manageable, so I completed 2 sweaters with black accents this year. I've got two more in the works!

And one of my latest sweaters, Mr. Greenjeans #2. It didn't turn out that great - I HATE picking up collars. I can't do it right and they end up way too tight.

Before knowing that they needed to be 10.81 inches long, I have decided to knit my father some socks. Good thing I chose Thuja and a worsted weight yarn - I went from this to this:

in one evening.

I love love this yarn, it has an unsurpassed springiness for a worsted weight 1005 merino, very tightly spun, but as usual with STR, I am tepid about the colorway. Heaven would be to have Lorna's Laces colors, I am dreaming of Charcoal, with this yarn.

I found out not so long ago that my sister is allergic to wool. Not unusual I know.
So I hunted around my LYS and found 'Grinasco' 30% alpaca and 10% acrylic.
It's beautiful to knit with and quite chunky a bit like 'Brown sheep pride'.
The pattern is Flora by Kate Kuckro, free from KNITTY.
The only adjustment I made was stitching a few green glass beads into the centre of it.
I've been wanting to make one for myself but I guess it will have to go down on my new projects list for next year.

I know its not knitted!!!

Death by Asphyxiation...wel not quite but the crochet hook certainly hurt my hands.
Now I think I'm safe posting this here as a certain punk pal might recognize this.
The pattern is from Anti-craft one of Severina's designs...it took a few trial and errors working out the right cotton to use and I chose to use a smaller needle size.
I really found it very easy to make and loved how the pattern flowed to make the square motif.
I'll certainly will be making some of these for xmas gifts.
Shannon you should make one.

Grace, from The Daily Knitter. Made from Schoeller Stahl Portofino (cotton/acrylic/nylon). This turned out much shorter than expected, but this goes with what is "in style" so it is all good. I hated it seaming it up, but it looks nice and casual (and warm) on. It used a lot more yardage of my sub yarn than expected but it was black so reordering was easy. I single croch*t'd around the edge and was too lazy to figure out the "shrimp stitch". I think it looks fine.

Oh, and obviously I had to lighten the photo, couldn't be bothered to change tanks!

Simple Knit Bodice, found at Stitchdiva.com. It isn't blocked yet, that is the only thing missing. I subbed SWTC Soy Silk for the Tilli Thomas silk and it is very soft. The gauge is a bit off though, mostly because I subbed the gauge of the pattern, not the gauge of the yarn. You can't see the hematite beads that are studding the lace, they are subtle and pretty.

wow, what a strange little knit this guy was! Maybe because at one point he is almost completely covered in stitch holders and I've some very old ones that look like big safety pins.
I'd love to have a whole feature wall made up off juju's:)

The only change I made to the pattern was the legs I worked the I-cord to the pattern but then increased and decreased the tips of the feet so that they would round out a bit.
I love wearing him but the down side is because I wear so much black and with my long hair he gets a little lost so I have to point him out to people!
When I went to buy eyes for him I couldn't decide what colour so I bought packets of red, green, yellow, black and brown....They were cheap!! But now I have too find other uses for them!
A friend of mine lent me Jess Hutchison's little book of 'Unusual toy for you to knit and enjoy'.
It's really cool but hard to get a hold of.
I'll see if I can get a photo of me wearing this foxy little number!

No laughing!
When I first saw this little number in knitty, it kind of caught me by surprise as I 'd never seen some one knit a dead fox before and I thought this is so me I need one!
I never thought that I would use that fun fur stuff but on this dead fox it looks pretty cool:)
I used two balls of Patons 'Ostrich', one in black and the other in a very dark blue, to give it a blue black look to it(like my hair).
The other black wool is a cheap acrylic and mohair mix.
It's knitting up pretty fast on those big fat number 10 needles so I best get me a couple of beagles to help me hunt down a pair of eyes, a nose and a clasp!

Cabled Tank Top. Made in Caron Simply Soft (to be able to wash it!). Needle sizes 8, 9, 10, 10.5 and 11. *phew*

This looks MUCH better on than in photos. I couldn't get a good photo of the back without it bunching up from me running to my photo spot before the camera went off. It doesn't generally look so bulky. I think. Also, my skirt is very large, so it kind of billows at my stomache now. I need to go shopping.

Here are the Cabled Fingerless gloves/mits whatever that I started on a plane ride from California to Missouri. A quick knit, if you actually take the time to knit them. I used a size 6 needle, and should of used a 5, since they are big. My hands aren't that huge. The photo here actually makes them look correct, I mean if I took the time to block them and all.

Its too nice out to wear them of course.

The Valentine's Vest is finished, and given as a present this morning! This is the Petrol Pattern from Knitty--it was an easy knit, and wonderfully written. Knitted with cashmerino, I originally wanted to knit it in solid black, but I got scared that I would run out of the cashmerino, so the stripe saved on some yarn--this was knit in Brown Sheep. In the end, I think it would have been close, but I would have had just enough yarn!

Kittyville Hat, SnB. Lionbrand CottonEase, and Bernat Boucle (this stuff never dies, I swear the ball goes on and on and on). Size 8 needles.

This hat would have taken a few hours, if I had knit on it for any length of time. I didn't add the earflaps, since I would have had to bust into another skein, and well, I didn't want to.

I much prefer ribbed bands, since this hat is a bit big, and it would of made it fit better. Bella was upset that she's never in photos so I dragged her into this one.

My Valentine Vest (aka Knitty's Petrol) is ready for the top back and front. Originally, I wasn't going to knit a stripe; however, when I began to worry about running short on the black cashmerino (and I bought every one of the balls in the dye lot!!!), the stripe was back in--I used some charcoal Brown Sheep from my stash! The ribbing pattern is fabulous, and I am happy that I knitted this in cashmerino, because it is soft and fluid!

After a little (well, okay, more than a little) time away from black, I am back to it. I cast on, with some black cashmere blend yarn, for knits Petrol--a man's vest for my honey's valentine's gift. I am knitting the entire thing in black, without a contrasting stripe. I am hoping for a quick knit (I only have 11 days), because I want to finish it before The Knitting Olympics begins--and alas, that project is not black! Pictures soon, I hope! Happy knitting!

Yay...I made it! I am a knittying blogger virgin no more! I have 4 balls of Jamieson's Shetland Double Knitting in Black of course! 170 yds/2 oz net weight. 22-26 sts/4"/26-30 rows on us 4 to 6 Needles...I bought it on super duper sale and have no idea what do do with it! ANY suggestions of patterns with be great!This stuff well, if you have ever touched it you know thats its itchy. I dont mind itchy but its a bit much...HELP!!

Yeaa.. It's finished! I'm not crazy about the yarn, but this is my practice run to try out the pattern. I love the fit and the shaping :), I only did 2 button holes and knitted the buttons right into the row instead of going back to sew them on. Pretty spiffy trick if you ask me hehee.

Here I am sporting my very own minisweater. It took a while to make as most of the instructions was all new too me, I'd never heard of raglan sleeves I didn't even know what I was knitting first! But I had lots of help from Shannon, she clued me in on the fact that I was knitting from the top down and it was all one piece. I also had help from and a knitting man at my LYS who showed me what raglan was. I Still need to find a groovy little button.
I used Heirloom 'merino magic', 8PLY, BLACK.
Now do I add the edging too it or not, sounds time consuming?
I wouldn't mind knitting something similar but with long sleeves.

ArrrrH!!, I've had so much problems with these mittens, they started off well until I reached the fingers. I don't know why when people write up their patterns that they don't proof read them or try to follow their own patterns just to make sure they work!
So what I've done is picked up bits and pieces from other patterns and finished them off myself.
The original pattern started with Mens Fingerless Gloves mixed with 21c Fingerless Mittens
and then bits and pieces from the Knit Mittens, book.
I'm off to do a bit of Xmas shopping and when I come back I'll see if I like them or not. I'm thinking too that maybe I should give my DBF just one, just to see that it fits, what do you think?

Bunny's Rear End

Just in case anybody was wondering what Black Bunny's bottom looked like, it's green and fluffy.
I only found out yesterday that there was a Bunny KAL, had I know earlier I might have entered him there. I had a good look through the site and there where some crazy looking bunnies there.
Anyway I realized that I hadn't made anything for my DBF, so I found a free pattern for fingerless gloves, which I know he wants. I should knit them out of steel wool as nothing he owns lasts for very long. But it will have to be 'Heirloom, Marino Magic,' in black of course.

a change of plans

So.... I had been getting nowhere fast with my Monk's Travel Satchel. I didn't like it. The gauge had changed, and technically the part I was working on was too wide anyhow and people kept telling me it wasn't worth all the work.

Then I needed some black yarn for a Christmas project, so...

The Travel Satchel is history. It is now the parts of a potholder and waiting to be sewn together.

Black Bunny hops in!

I'm very happy to be joining in with the black sheep.
And for my first project let me introduce to you Black Bunny.
The pattern is one of Kate Gilberts. He is my first ever knitted animal and he wasn't all that easy. Besides my choice in wool, patons ' Creme de la creme', which is so uneven with lots of lumpy bits and hairy bits and being black made it very tricky to knit. Frogged it at least twice.
And he nearly became known as 'Roadkill Bunny'.
I did get a bit of help from a women on the 'knitters review forum' as the instructions for the arms was a bit confusing.
But I'm happy with the end result and it will be hard to give him up but he is off to a little boy in Brixton.
I've nealy finished all my Xmas presents just need to sew them up and then I'll be onto my next black project....this is so much fun!

Moonlight Socks

Just cast on and knit three rounds of my new black socks. I am planning to making the stars and moons either hot pink or electric blue.

Update: This is the current state of the sock. The stitches are picked up along the gussets and I am ready to decrease down to the foot. I have to go work on the Kepler for a Christmas present, though, so the sock will have to wait for me for a small bit.

Another Flora

Here's another Flora--as inspired by Rebecca's Flora! Isn't that flower just lovely? Well, don't let its beauty fool you--it is a wicked thing to knit and attach! I used two strands of a cotton/wool blend with one strand of Blue Sky Alpaca. As I wrestled with the flower and had 3 rows to go, I ran out of the alpaca, so I threw in the purple! All this was from my stash. Perhaps I will hunt down a new color combination for my next Flora! I intended this for a gift, but would love to wear it myself . . . tomorrow!

The fingerless mitts above are knitted in a cashmere/merino blend--they are soft and warm (and of course, my favorite pair were the black ones!). I used the pattern from the Weekend Knitting Book. All three pair were supposed to be for christmas gifts, but I gave them to the intended recipeints already!
I was so inspired by Rebecca's photos of her Flora, that I got busy and started my own, in black . . . and this time I am wrapping it up and saving it for Christmas! Photos of mine soon to come, and thanks, Rebecca

Finished my first black basket! Well, I still have to felt it, but it's so cool looking. I'm using the pattern for the tri-fold bowl in the A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting by Cat Bordhi. Instead of using the black and white she uses, I used a black heather and a light gray heather. They look great together (and since I'm a Raider's fan, the *really* look great) and I can't wait to see how they look felted together! Pics after the felting.

Nice idea for a KAL! I'm working on a pair of arm warmers in black, but they've been put aside for Christmas knitting. I'll be starting a black basket for my niece this weekend...I'll post pics with my progress. The wool I'm using is black with white flecks in it...I can't wait to see how it felts up!

hello all! i'm jumping in with my black Flora.
i'm using some some 30%silk 70%merino i spun myself and plyed with knitpicks "midnight" baby alpaca lace wt. i'm also knitting in an extra strand of the alpaca for added green hairs that are in it. just let me tell ya, knitting black and keeping it black is not easy with a white great dane! lol

Illusion knitting

This is my illusion knitting project. Or well, 'tis the back of the sweater. I have started the front. At first, I mucked up the illusion part. I didn't really understand how the motif was supposed to be knit so I asked one of my knitting peeps to bring her copy of Shadow Knitting to our regular Monday night knit out at the Borders Café. After that, I frogged six rows, looked at the chart I wrote again, looked at the illusion knitting basic color alternations, and violá! the heart is starting to become visible. Yay. Some cool things about this sweater: (1) I am knitting it for my DD with yarn leftover from someone else's Christmas jumper; (2) I designed the sweater myself using the illusion techniques; (3) it belongs to the Black Sheep Knitalong; and (4) it belongs to the Illusion Knitalong, too.

Okay, fellow black sheep knitters, I have a question for you. I am making a shadow knitted sweater for my daughter. That means that it is 50% black and 50% red: I've got two rows of black garter stitch alternating with two rows of red Stockinette stitch. Does this sweater qualify for this KAL? Enquiring minds want to know.

I have a skein of black Wool Ease burning a hole in my yarn stash, and I needed to start some socks so I cast on last night. So far my manufactured pattern is working out okay, but you can't tell because they're black! Ha!

I don't have photos yet, but I've started Blackberry from the latest Knitty in my black (and white and a bit of grey) Classic Elite Gatsby. It is so soft, and a joy to knit with. So far I'm done with the back and have started one sleeve. After that is another sleeve, two fronts, then sew it up and add ribbing (like the OSW).

First dpn project

I learned how to manage the dpns Monday night. The dork quotient was quite high at the café. It feels really awkward and I wanted to try to knit upside down, if that makes any sense. I kept trying to hold the triangle in the vertical plane instead of in the horizontal plane.

Well, six rows of double moss stitch later, it was a little less awkward but I was dreading the decreases. Oh, I decided that the ribbing I am using is double moss stitch because there are 42 stitches per round and the k2, p2 rib that I was going to use would have had two columns of k2 adjacent to one another where the rounds join. So, since I had already painstakingly finished the first row, I simply decided to reverse the knits and purls like a simple seed or moss stitch. Hence the double moss stitch.

Now the cozy is all done and is damp and blocking on a pint carton. The worsted weight yarn that is the carrier is black and the Cascade Fixation is a dark purple. Obviously, the cozy is slightly more black than purple and that's why it is on this blog.

Sorry, everyone, for not posting anything... I have been not working on my black project, and I don't have any pictures because I lack a digital camera, but I'll describe what I'm making with my black acrylic yarn.

It's the Monk's Travel Satchel, which can be downloaded (for free) from Interweave Press here. The story so far is that I started this project...eek, maybe a year ago? and set it aside to make some gifts and design a sweater and do some other stuff. When I picked it up again a couple weeks ago, my gauge had changed, so I'm trying to sort that issue out without having to rip back all the way and start over again. Not that I've gone very far - perhaps 8 inches of the main strap. But still...

This is a really nice project to learn/practice Norwegian purling with if you are a continental knitter like I am. A lot of it is seed stitch, which greatly encourages you to find ways to NOT bring that yarn back and forth after every stitch.

I cast on for the Rustic Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. Its a glorified scarf knit length wise. It will be mostly black, but I have some dark green to fit in there too! Have to make the most of the stripes!

Thanks SO much to Lu for taking time out of her knitting to do the crochet edging for me. Its confirmed that I am probably only 50% crochet gimpy, and the other 50% has to do with the hooks I own.

And the specs: around 3.5 balls of Schachenmayr Micro in 0099 (black folks, black). Size 5 needles. If I was to make this again, I would keep decreasing on the shoulders, since its a bit wide for me. I'm having a curling problem even after steaming but I'm sure after I toss it in the wash and dry it flat it will be perfect. I just wanted to wear it today!

Slip stitch sweater

The slip stitch sweater is coming along nicely. The back is already 15" long. Normally I like to do one project until it is complete before starting another but right now I am also doing a white poncho (top down in the round) for my niece. It is a good combination: when one extreme gets tough on the eyes, just swap.

Okay, I made a black sweater vest for myself that has pink stripes on the front yoke. I hate the way it fits. It is much too bulky under the arms. It was double knit. So, I am going to rip it all out. Yes, the entire completed sweater and start all over again with a new pattern that is actually an enlarged version of the slip stitch pullover I did for my daughter. Wish me luck - because I really am going to need it.

Untangling black yarn! My original 5 skeins of Rowan Cork have become so tangled it is practically impossible for me to finish my Minisweater! So I'll be untangling black yarn for the next week or so ...

The Silk Camisole, from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I don't fully understand the directions for some weird reason, but hey, I'm not ashamed to have to have someone spell it out for me! The cup part is worded weird, but maybe I'm just mesmerized by the photo of her pointy boobs. The yarn is Schachenmayr Micro, and its soft and uh, black! Obviously not silk, but hey, its still soft.

P.S. When I ran in to Creative Hands yesterday I came across yet another skein of black Cascade 220 superwash to add to my collection in the sale bin. Maybe I can use that for my Tivoli!

Okay, so I admire Shannon so much I'm also making a black minisweater. That, and I have some black Rowan Cork that is aran weight and I'm trying to get rid of. So far I'm still at the trying on stage, which seems to be taking forever. Here is the latest photo:

Ahh, the Minisweater is finished! Made of approx. 1.5 skeins of Cotton Ease. Started it on a Tuesday morning and finished it on Thursday night. I did knit more than normal, so that's why it was such a quick knit. It was really fun to make! I didn't do any modifications to the pattern, and it fits.
